Aims and Scope

THNHMJ is pleased to accept the publication of basic research in natural history, covering fields such as taxonomy and systematics, biodiversity, checklists, biogeography, ecology and behavior, morphology, physiology, and other related sciences including agriculture and human culture. Our journal primarily focuses on studies conducted in Thailand. However, research from neighboring countries that shares interconnected natural resources with Thailand is also accepted on a limited basis.

The journal covers the following scopes of content:

1. Taxonomy and Systematic. The journal welcomes manuscripts on species descriptions, including new species descriptions, new geographic records, and taxonomic revisions of higher taxa based on morphological or molecular/DNA evidence. Systematic and evolutionary studies are also included in this scope.

2. Biodiversity. This scope covers the study of diverse extinct and extant species within a specific ecosystem or across various ecosystems. Species checklists and biogeographical studies are also welcome.

3. Ecology and Behavior. Ecology is the study of the relationships between living organisms and their environment, including both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components. Behavior in living organisms refers to actions or responses elicited by internal and external stimuli, which are essential for survival and reproduction.

4. Morphology. In biology, morphology is the study of the physical form, structure, and specific structural features of living organisms.

5. Another Field. Many cultures rely on biodiversity for their livelihoods, medicine, agriculture, and spiritual practices, underscoring the vital link between ecological and cultural preservation.

Types of Published Articles

Original Articles. Original articles present original findings based on investigations or study conducted by the authors. These articles address a specific research question or hypothesis. An original article should include sections: abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgements, references, and declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process. The total length of the manuscript, including references, table, and figure is not limited.

Short Communications. Short communications follow the same format as original articles, but with less extensive results and discussion. Acceptance remains subject to the reviewers' evaluation.

Review Articles. Review articles provide an overview of a specific topic by synthesizing evidence from published studies, guidelines, and policy documents. These articles explain key concepts, critically evaluate the current state of knowledge, and identify gaps in natural science information. The total length of the manuscript, including references, table, and figure is not limited.

Publication Frequency

THNHMJ publishes two issues per year, with each issue containing five to seven articles, totaling approximately 10–14 peer-reviewed articles annually. Editorials are not included in this count. The issues are released according to the following schedule:

o            Issue 1: January–June

o            Issue 2: July–December

Publication Charges

THNHMJ is an open-access journal supported totally by the National Science Museum Thailand (NSM). The journal welcomes submissions from researchers and graduated students whose work meets the journal’s editorial standards and scope. There are no submission fees, page charges, or article processing charges for manuscripts submitted to the journal. All costs associated with the editorial process, publication management, and online dissemination are covered by the National Science Museum Thailand.

Language

All manuscripts submitted to THNHMJ must be written in clear and readable English. Authors are encouraged to use concise and grammatically correct language to ensure clarity and effective communication of their works.

Editorial Policy

Manuscripts submitted to THNHM undergo peer review to assess their suitability for publication. Submissions must present original research characterized by sound methodology, clear presentation of results, and a discussion directly relevant to the natural sciences.

The journal is published online, and all articles are available through the journal’s website.

The Editors reserve the right to request manuscript revisions at any stage of the peer-review process prior to publication. The views and content expressed on the website or in published articles belong solely to the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official positions of the publisher or the Editorial Board.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts submitted to THNHMJ undergo single-blind peer review by at least three independent experts. Prior to external review, the editorial team conducts an initial screening to ensure the submission aligns with the journal’s scope, ethical standards, and basic scientific quality. If an Editor has a competing interest, another member of the editorial team will manage the review process.

Submissions displaying a textual similarity rate exceeding 20% (excluding references) are subject to desk rejection. Authors may be required to submit copies of related or prior publications to verify the originality of their work.

THNHMJ operates under an open-access policy. Published articles are accessible to readers without subscription or charge.

Any modification, adaptation, translation, or creation of derivative works is strictly prohibited. Commercial use of any published content is also not allowed without prior written consent.

Upon publication, copyright of the article, including its text, figures, tables, and supplementary materials, is held by NSM.

Authors retain the right to deposit their published article in non-commercial open-access repositories and include it in academic theses or dissertations, provided THNHMJ is properly cited as the original place of publication. Authors may also reuse portions of the article in future scholarly works with appropriate attribution.

All articles published in THNHMJ are open access and licensed as described in the journal’s Copyright and Licensing policy.

Users may download and share this material for non-commercial purposes, provided it remains unmodified and proper credit is given to the authors and THNHMJ. Any commercial use, adaptation, translation, or republication requires prior written permission from the President of NSM.

Proper Attribution

All reprinted, reused, or adapted materials should include full and accurate citation of the original article, including Author(s). Year of publication. Article title. Journal title Volume (issue): page numbers. Permanent URL (where applicable).

The attribution must clearly state that the material is used under the applicable Creative Commons license.

Phrases like 'Reprinted with permission' are unnecessary and may create confusion over reuse rights.

Recommended Attribution Format

To ensure clarity and consistency, THNHMJ requires that all reprinted or adapted material include a full article citation, formatted according to the receiving publication’s reference style.

Revenue Sources

THNHMJ is financially supported by the National Science Museum Thailand. This institutional support enables the journal to manage its editorial process, maintain its online platform, and disseminate scientific research in epidemiology and public health without charging publication fees to authors.

 

The journal also benefits from national initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and management of academic publishing in Thailand. Coordinated by entities such as the Thai-Journal Citation Index (TCI) Centre, these programs help elevate editorial standards, streamline publication processes, and foster the overall development of scholarly journals.

All funding received for the journal is used solely for its operation and continuous development. Funding sources have no influence on editorial policies, the peer-review process, or publication decisions. Every manuscript is evaluated independently through the journal’s peer-review process, based strictly on its academic quality, scientific rigor, and alignment with the aims and scope of THNHNJ.

THNHMJ is committed to upholding transparency, editorial independence, and research integrity throughout the publication process.

Advertising

THNHMJ does not accept or display paid advertising. As the journal does not publish commercial advertisements, no procedures or decisions regarding advertisement acceptance are required.

News and announcements, such as natural history academic activities or museum events, are clearly separated from editorial content and exert no influence on editorial decision-making. This dedicated section is reserved exclusively for promoting relevant academic activities.

History of Journal

The Thailand Natural History Museum Journal, THNHMJ (ISSN 1686-770X) was established in 2005 as biannual publication without a fixed number of articles per issue, a format that continued through 2019. However, since 2020, THNHMJ has restricted its publication to a maximum of seven articles per issue, corresponding to approximately 10–14 articles per volume annually. The journal is published in both print and online formats, releasing two issues per year: January–June and July–December.
